  when i was a jw, the key issue that caused me to doubt the wt was the trinity.

  the wtb&ts's blatent misquotations and misrepresentations of religious scholarship to fit their anti-trinitarian presuppositions are horrid and inexcusable.

  that issue, however, was not the issue that caused me to become a christian.

  XJW4EVR, i'm ok with you believing that jesus lived and died and was resurrected, i don't have any problem with that. but show me the big amount of name-calling, insults and condescension you are talking about. what insecurity are you talking about?

  tell you what, the way you put words it's hard to not start a little name calling.

  on topic:

  alright, there were some people who were convinced something special happened and told it to everyone. guess what happened last century? there were some people called the bible students, jehovah's witnesses later, who thought there was something special going on in 1799, 1875, 1914, 1925, 1975 etc. they were so convinced about it, they spent their lives preaching it to everyone they got hold of. and they went from 0 to 7.500.000 in a mere 120 years or so.

  the fact that some people were convinced about something does not provide one bit of proof.

  i posted a lengthy concern a while back about my 23 year old daughter on the verge of baptism.

  the good news is she still hasn't progressed past studying - no door knocking thank god.

  the bad news is she's still studying, attending meetings, etc and i am still very much a "satanic influence.

  i was discussing with an elder today, and as usual the conversation drifted towards apostates and their line of reasoning, he angrily looked into my eyes with the scriptures in his hand and told me:.

  (1) that apostates are destructive peddlers who shut the door of everlasting life on people as they are very sure they have no portion in there.

  he quoted matt 23:13- 13 woe to you, scribes and pharisees, hypocrites!

  that's the core that survived, yeah. but it's documented, that as early as marcion (~ 85-160 ) many (in some parts of the world the majority of) christians didn't believe in the resurrection story.

  our motives for what we are doing? what are we doing?

  i think he mistakes us apostates for some religious organization. we are as heterogenous as it gets.

  in those first 300 years they couldn't even agree on basic points of their belief. that faith was invented on the go. if they couldn't agree on who/what jesus was in the first centuries after he supposedly died and was resurrected (hell, they couldn't even agree on his resurrection), something indeed does not add up.

  i'll add that book to my list. i did read josephus and the passages you talk about and it doesn't take a linguist to see that one of them doesn't fit there at all.
